Sheepskin Udones
#1
Someone asked about how we make our super comfy sheepskin UDONES

Here you go:

The "sock" unfolded. The outside. Long enough around the ankle and across the top of the foot to overlap. When measuring make sure you allow for the nap of the wool.

Sheepskin udones in place. Made long enough to fold over the top of the caliga. Does a great job keeping sand, gravel and snow out! Wear with cloth udones for super extra warm toes!

Keep the leather lightly oiled for additional waterproofing. After a time the wool will compress and form to your foot creating arch supports.

Leave them inside your caliga. Makes it easier and faster to put them on.

Have you seen this method for wearing cloth?

Paul yes, or rather: something like it. It was in part Mrs Centurio's first interpretation of the Vindolanda "bootie" before we got better pictures...We also have a few guys in Hispana who cross dress as WWI and WII German reenactors.

There are too many ways to wrap stuff about your feet to keep them comfy..

One of the nice things about caliga is that you can loosen the lacings to accomodate foot wrappings... thick and thin

I forgot to mention that a the sheepskin liner can easily hide orthotics and assorted modern arch supports.

How hot are they in the Summer months? I am about to buy a shearling to do it, but was wondering about heat. I mainly want them to keep my modern sissy feet from blistering to bad around the ankle area. I ordered a pair of naalbinded socks about a year ago, but am told it will still be another year to get them. Apparently I was WAYYYY down on the list.

I was also wondering where you got the skin. Do you know how long the hair is or what length would be preferable? I have seen from 8" to 3/4" length hair and numerous types of skin. Thanks.

Comfy in summer.. toes breathe!

I used sheep for my first pair... too thick... then tried shearling... too thin, then unsheared lamb ...just right... best for my old tired feet... one skin per foot.. the rest of the beastie became polishing pads.. cut up into squares, oiled and tossed into a circle pouch of talc or fine ground pumice.... or turned into a cat toy... or used to pad the sole of someone else's caliga.... or the cheeks of their helmet... or shoulders of their subarmalis

Try "Tandy"...

I can attest to these wild accusations. They look very comfy, as I have seen them in person. They also look like they help to take some of the damage to the leather.
