Hello all! I am new hear and really want to make some roamn things. I am an 8th grade latin student and am unable to be in any re-enactment group. I am currently making a pair of cagilae and was wondering a few things. 1) is there any way for me to be in any group of roman re-enatctors (or just be there) 2) bends for the sole of the shoes are like $150. I was wondering how to get some shoe sized peices for the sole without having to buy the whole hide and 3) when making that cagilae how do I scale up the pattern?

Thanks much

Iace

PS If it helps I am making the shoes following the pattern on this page (great site btw).

Hey Iace welcome to RAT,

First, where are you from? Some groups may let you participate as a full legionary...it really depends on the group leader. If not, there are other roles to be played until you are the proper age.

Iace, I feel your pain. I'm not even strong enough to support myself standing up in the armour.

Keltica has the correct hobnails (made by DSC Armory)

You should be able to get help from a group making a lot of your own equipment to save money. (Shield Tunic belt)

The best price adequate Gladius is from Find it Armory at $85.00

Try Rusty at Soul of the Warrior for a discount Pugio: $60
(Tell him how old you are and that you need a discount!)

For a helmet post a message in the marketplace that you need a free helmet!

You are not too young if a parent (or grandparent) attends events with you. My grandson was 14 when he attended his first event and drilled with the Legion!

Thanks for all of the suport! I will talk to legio 6 or legio 4 who are both in my area! I will try and get my dad (60, but really strong) to do it, but my older brother who actually looks kinds roman to do it, he is like 22 and so should fit the bill nicely.

Thank you all for the support as I try to start this endeavor!

On the Soul of the Warrior site,

I wouldn't recommend the 'Royal' pugio, the 'Kunzig' pugio or the excrable 'AH3264E Pugio'. They simply aren't accurate and don't look like the real thing.

The sheath for the 'Buciumi' pugio looks odd and you should be aware that the original Buciumi dagger dates to the second half of the second century.

Your safest bet is probably the 'brass beaded pugio' which is somewhat better than the rest.

Or maybe the P Pugio or Titelberg that most folks would rate over the B Beeded... and make your own decisions... different groups have different standards, so check with those you are going to play with, they will help you out.

The Kunzig has been redone and is pretty accurate now for a later legionary (no, not perfect... just better than it was).

Of course the truth is all these are far better (yes, even the Christmas Pugio) than anything you will see on Ebay for 10-20 doallrs... You get what you pay for.

For that matter the Deepeeka limited edition pugio (so much I did not even put it on the site) runs about $600... and custom ones WAY beyond that!

Does anyone else remember when we all thought the AH3264E was the best off the shelf (despite its problems)? Now we slam it? Standard goes up and up, so don't just write everything off as "useless". We never know what may be found tomorrow...

Now when I was 13-14 $600 was like a Million, so shoot me an email, and I will see what I can do. My son is 12, and he can drill folks as good as me, so don't let your age hold you back. Have fun. Bring your Dad too. Great bonding experience for you both.

Good luck young Caligula!
