Latin help?
#1
Hello

Just a quickie!

Been looking at some work by a Japanese artist and she's used some Latin. I just wanted to check the translation, if anyone could help that would be great Big Grin

Quote:nemo ante mortum beatus / vive memor mortis

No-one before death .. something??

Quote:dum spiro spero

Googled this as "while I breathe, I hope", is that right?

Thank you! x

You seem to have two separate quotes there.
The first is a Latin translation of a Greek remark of Solon, that well-known party animal: "no-one is happy before their death".
The second I don't recognise, but it means "Live mindful of death".

Cheery thoughts! Big Grin

No one is blessed before death( except it should be mortem) mortum is an adjective/ live mindful of death.

Odd, but not horrible Latin. Hopefully it's not tattooed on anyone.

Ah, my bad, I should have typed "mortem"!

Not a tattoo (as far as I know!) Big Grin -
