But why don't I see people wearing the d*mn things then?? :? cry: Cry Tongue
One school of thought is that they came out of the gladiator arena. Thus sculptors were not allowed to (or chose not to) depict a citizen legionary wearing slave gladiator's armor. Then, of course, modern reenactors are hesitant, because of a seemingly lack of artistic evidence. However, we know that they were put into use, at least during the Dacian campaigns, along with the cross reinforcements on helmets.

So, how about cataphracti? Are they depicted with manicae? Because the whole point of cataphracti was the heavy armor, right? Or am I completely missing the point now? :? P

No, you're not missing the point at all!

Here is a picture from Simon James book from Dura Europas depicting a Roman cataphract
[Image: paintingcataphract.jpg]

The Dura graffito seems to show a fully armoured cavalryman with manicae and banded leg armour
[Image: figure3.jpg]

And the Alba Iulia relief shows an infantryman with a manica

Considering the interest this post has generated, is there anyone who would be willing to undertake an experimental manica or banded armor piece? Experimental meaning it doesn't have to be perfect. Smile

I'd try it myself if I had the time and the tools, but you know how it goes...
