I wish Rome was still around. Assuming i am born in the upperclass. Maybe even in the Imperial household. Though that seemed to be dangerous as well....

It would have been interesting though to see what the world would be like in modern days if the mighty Roman Empire were able to keep its grasp on all its territory.

From a female point of view I wouldn't be too keen, no offence guys, but I quite enjoy having my rights as a female nowadays Big Grin

I would take certain Roman times over Medieval though. Christian oppression made hair, clothes and jewellery much plainer. The roads were better and the baths sound quite nice!

However it is hard to tell how a civilisation would had evolved.

It still is as far as I know. I hope it hasn't been moved, I'm going there this month!

The Holy Roman Empire still exists in the papalcy.

I enjpoy the irony of having the romans come to britain in 43AD, conquering the better part of the island, building roads, forums, forts, and most importantly, sewers, only to have it all destroyed in the dark ages and have people shouting ''Garde looz'' from the rooftops and into the streets 1700 years later.

It is my personal belief that had the barbarians been kept at bay, the crisis of the 3rc century not occured and the empire not partitioned (and any other invisible evil that might have occured had the previous not occured), that we would be a good 2000 years ahead of what we are now.

We would be looking at rectangular playing card shapes in the dunes of mars through a telescope and wondering how they got there if at present we cannot, much as it was with the vikings getting to america before columbus.

The whole Western world is a direct descendant of Rome. Our law is based on Roman law, our languages are based on or contain a lot of Latin, the Western way of life still echoes Rome, from our town layouts and cities with houses and appartments to our love of fast food. Indeed as Peroni said too, the Holy Roman Empire exists in the Papacy. The Emperor was in effect replaced by the Pope- he even still holds the title Pontifex Maximus to this day. The Vatican is actually still the most powerful place on earth in regards to influence and wealth regarding it's size. Roman Catholicsm is a fusion of Ancient Roman traditions and Christianity. I won't go into it too much here as I don't want to start a religious debate, but it is a heritage I personally am proud of, and luckily the school I attended was quite open about this 'fusion'.

So....... who said Rome had gone away ?

Well, first I had to do some research to learn about the warld, but now that I have, I can't stop laughing.

I think if Alexander had conquered China, he probably would have died of rice wine poisoning, and things would have gone much the same.

The Holy Roman Empire was really Medieval Germany/Prussia. I always thought of it as a Wannabe Rome, just the name was similar. The Holy Roman Empire never controlled Rome.

The Vatican is the last remaining grounds of the Western Empire, wouldn't it be? And Yes i do like the thought of the Catholic church being somewhat the Living Legacy of Rome. Allows me to say I am ROMAN...........catholic. And perhaps i can justify dressing up like a legionnaire to my girlfriend on these premises.
