Roman ReEnacting Legion in Florida?
#1
Hey everyone,

My name is Travis, new to the forum. Hoping to begin my major in History specifically the Roman Republic and Early Roman Empire. Mostly self taught at the moment. Not a lot of relevant classes for pre majors, just a basic Roman history class.

Anyway, point of the post was to see if there are any Reenactment legions in Florida? Seems to be the closest is the chapter in Alabama, or was it Arkansas? Perhaps i am mistaken. Also Legio XI in Atlanta.

Both seem very good, but id like to see if there is something closer, so if anyone knows of a more local one, please let me know.

And i hope i posted this is an acceptable place.

Hey Travis,

I looked through Matt Amt's list of groups, and there isn't one in Florida. Your best bet is probably Legio XI in Atlanta... 8)

Ya i figured id have to travel a bit.

I really would love to join up with one. No better way to learn than hands on after all. seems like a great time as well. Plus i need some expert tips to help put together a solid Legionary Kit.

Have been researching a while. Came across Leg VI a while ago and that website as well as a few others including IX and XI that were pointing me in the right direction so i am getting a general idea of what i will need.

Thanks Guys for the reply

I'm the same in chicago, there is 1 legion, and it is inactive.

Thats a bummer, hopefully they will reactivate. Seems like Chicago would be an easy place to get one going, any city really.

Really want to put together a great kit and the best way seems to be working with one of these legions. Id hate to buy something that later turned out to be inaccurate.

Travis,
Welcome aboard! You're in the right place for info and guidence. I'm from the Sunshine State too and have found no re-enactment groups of any size. Just a handfull of us scattered around the state. Quite a few events take place in Georgia and S. Carolina starting in the Fall so you should have plenty of time to piece an outfit together. I hope to fall in the ranks of the Auxillary soon. Keep an eye out in the Market Place section here on RAT. You'll see lots of stuff for sale.
Thanks,

Thanks for the tip.

With all the re-enacting hopefuls throughout florida hopefully a legion will spring up in the future. I have seen the events up north specifically the Fort Lafe. They look awesome I'd love to be able to attend one soon. I will scour the market place and get a kit together. I have the "handbooks" from a few of the legions websites, so we'll see how it goes.

I will keep my ear out if you get anything together. I am messing about with Roman in the SCA, but something like this would be very interesting to me as well.

Speaking for Legio XI I'd like to invite Florida residents to join us at any of our upcoming events. We have one coming up this month (18,19,20) which is the annual Georgia Latin Club event at Rock Eagle park(Eatonton,Ga) and the Castra Romana,Atlanta in June.
I suggest you join the Legio XI website. As members you'll get to browse more deeply into the site which has lots of info on kit and pictures of equipment and past events. We'd love to have you.

While I would encourage you to join Legio VI and Legio XI because they are established groups that are active I would also encourage you to start your own. You would be surprised what one or two people together forming a group can make i.e. a large group.

If someone starts a group I can promise to sporadically attend events when not busy with any of my 40,000 other things going on. Big Grin

Between SCA, fighting robots, horse shows, job, kids, etc. I probably would not be too useful in starting up a new group, but I support the idea.

Well I hardly have the appropriate knowledge to begin a group on my own, for now.

Perhaps a few years spent with an experienced legion could help me out in understanding how i could form one, if I had enough people working on it with me.

Andy-Thanks for the invite, I am going to check out your guys' website, I have been on a few times before. The events this month are too soon, id never make it. The ones in June though.............
Perhaps i will even have atleast a Basic Kit together by then, hopefully.

If a basic kit is what is keeping you from attending and participating at events Legio VI and Legio XX maintain several "Loaner Kits" for people like you. All you need do is ask one of the officers.

Hope to see you at one of the events!

FYI - Legio XI's webite ( [url:dbs2heir]http://www.11thlegion.com[/url] ) is currently being revised. So there are a few dead links, but those will soon be fixed. Stop by any way, and check it out.

In the meantime, if you need any help with anything, you can contact me or Edge here on RAT.
