Roman cavalry harness
#1
Hello,

I'm currently making a roman cavalry harness.

It's a lot of work. First i have to make the pieces in wax. Then, i have made a mould:

Then we have to cast a lot of pieces in wax, using that moulds.

Then, we give the wax pieces to a profesional, who makes them in bronze.

Then, we have to file, etc, until get the finished bronze piece.

The next step, is to silvered the pieces and enamel the decorations.

To be continued...

Good luck!!!

There are more than a hundred pieces by harness. The picture only covers the buckles, the "t" clasps, and the connectors for the phalerae. Lacks the phalerae, decorative terminals, nielloed studs, etc...

The motivation for do it myself is that if i have to buy it, it will costs over 10.000 euros. Just do the multiplication. A buckle in a on-line shop costs aprox 30-50 euros...

Fantastic job, Cesar!

Do you do the casting yourself or do you bring your wax models to a casting firm?

I'm want to do it myself, as I want to do that whole impression myself, totally based on local findings from the Nijmegen area, where I live. I know the amount of work, doing making lots and lots of plastic castings for my modell railroad.

I fully understand, I would do the same thing, but have yet to locate a good local firm.

Excellent stuff!

Beautifull workmanship, Cesar! How many sets are you making? The leather alone will also set you back some major euro's and I shudder at the amount of stitching involved! Great effort Big Grin
