Castra LAFE Hoard Proposal
#1
Ave All;

My proposal is to bury a box of broken/used reenactment gear at the LAFE
fort next year during the annual event. I guess it would qualify as a practical joke aimed at Archaeologists far in the future! Perhaps burying
a few items in various locations each year could become an annual event
in itself!

Such as:

Celt shield fragments in the ditch

Sling ammo all around

Altar and gravestone fragments

Anyone think this is a good idea and want to help?

If you want to gave items away, you may also send them to me Big Grin

And if you want to be historical correct, you could always bury your helmet for the gods. We know from several sites at least some auxilia soldiers came back to their home town, when they got out of service, and buried their gear at a temple, or their initial military campement/home.

I have an old pair of segmentata girth loop sections that I would be willing to donate.

That is not that bad of an idea!

This is just another suggestion. I have not participated the last two years because of my job but what about an alter. A simple alter made of concrete on the hill next to the fort or near the fort? Kind of like a cemetery.

For example Lafe 09 the first event could be the dedication of the alter for Lafe 08. You can have the legion that had the most participation design it or their legio symbol on it or if the Celts are victorious in capturing the fort have the Celtic symbol on it. It would just simply say what year (year since the founding of Rome) the event was and who was victorious in holding or capturing the fort.

The alter could be the same generic alter every year except for the front plate. The words could be created when the concrete was poured in by having wooden dowls cut in have and formed to make words. Have a nice scroll decoration on top with a small metal bowl on top for burning incense at each dedication ceremony each year. Paint the alter white, letters in red, and form the troops for inspection!

Just an idea.

Neat ideas!

I like the altar idea too!

Hey, maybe you should bury some Trooper Helmets and really throw off some archaeologists

The Celts actually did something similar to your idea this year. On Friday night we lit torches and marched around the site to end up at a pond. We then offered sacrifices to the gods. Granted, our sacrifices were a cheap brass bowl and a cheap torque, but it still was rather awesome. By the way, if anyone is wanting to get rid of a trooper helmet that bad, I will take one. I have been wanting to make a Batavian helmet, but I don't want to buy a good helmet to destroy.

Is it even possible to salvage a Trooper Helm? :?

Well, all I need is the basic bowl. It is going to be covered with fur and leather. No neck guard, no cheek guards, no brow guard, and most of the decorative rivets removed.

Amalric is right! Trooperhelmets make great Batavian cutdowns. So do NOT chuck yours, go Batavian and join the merry band of Peronis. Get a mink or marten for the fur. Mind you, be creative, these were things flung together on basis of personal taste, as long as it looked fearsum. Get your oval shield right (I sent him some digital renderings plotable in full scale), do a sleeved tunic, get some breeches and your off!
