Phillip\'s Phalanx
#1
I'm examining a line from Diodorus's history- 16.2.3

I'd like to know what the greek speakers think of this translation:

[2] epenoêse de kai tên tês phalangos puknotêta kai kataskeuên, mimêsamenos ton en Troiai tôn hêrôôn sunaspismon, kai prôtos sunestêsato tên Makedonikên phalanga.

[2] Indeed he devised the compact order and the equipment of the phalanx, imitating the close order fighting with overlapping shields of the warriors at Troy, and was the first to organize the Macedonian phalanx.

Is this correct? Any subtleties lost in translation?

A Spartan, being asked a question, answered "No." And when the questioner said, "You lie," the Spartan said, "You see, then, that it is stupid of you to ask questions to which you already know the answer!"

This is a description of Phillip's rearming and retraining the macedonians after he takes over and after they had lost some 4,000 men to the Illyrians. There are some authors who believe he is talking about hoplites, which I discount, and others who want to use this to show that until then hoplites didn't overlap their shields- that he invented close order in imitation of the lines from the Illiad.
