Late Roman earthwork defences in Sarmatia
#1
I'm hoping somebody here might be able to help me out, particularly any Hungarian board members.
Does anyone know of any modern works or references in english to the Constantinian earthworks beyond the Danube. The only reference I have is to Mocsy's work on Pannonia in the Late Imperial Period from 1974.

Hi,

It's quite difficult to find anything published in English about the topic.

The earthworks are called Csörsz árok (Csörsz ditch) in Hungarian, try that in Google.

So far I have found this one from a Hungarian roman group's site:
http://gladius.org.hu/eng/rom.doc

and this one was published in the UK:
http://direct.bl.uk/bld/PlaceOrder.do?U ... archengine

And there are several more written in German which can be useful if you are familiar with that language (Hungarian archeologists prefer German to English as a second language for publications)

Hope that helped

Hi Iosephus,
Many thanks indeed for these links. I'll check them out when I get home. My German is a bit limited for full blown archaeological treatises - to be honest its limited full stop - but its better than my Hungarian!

Thanks again,
Stephen
