Here's a pre-existing how-to:

Thanks for reminding.
I also saw that one in the past.
As a stated before the techiques are almost the identical.
The only difference i see is that i use metric instead of inches, and that i make no use of bracing the shieldboard with extra strips for strenght.

I just would like to point out that the Hjortspring findings date to 350 BC, not to the 1st c. BC or even AD.
Also, the shields were AFAIK slightly curved from left to right, but I may be mistaken, since I can´t find

K. Randsborg, Hjortspring. Warfare and Sacrifice in Early Europe, Aarhus, 1995.

at the moment to check back.

Has the dating being done by Radiocarbondating (C14) or by other artefacts in context?

The next steps are for both sides of the shield.

The wood glue is brought onto the shield board.
The linen is placed over de glued part.
Cut the linen to size with a margin for the glueing the linen over the sides.
Strecht the linen to get all the wrinckles out.
Cut the hole for the shield grip

next step saoking the linen width woodglue.

Mixe some woodglue width water, as thick as milk, and brush this over the glued linen.
Now let it dry for an evening.

When the drying is done, find the predrilled umbo holes and pierce with an awl trough the linen, so that afterwards you don't have to try to find these holes.

When both sides are done, you can seal the shield of whith wax, linseedoil or paint.

I read the part on the LegioXX website for building a scutum and found a possible alternatef for hot waxing the shield.
This is a test fase, it hasn't proven itself yet in rain and snow.
I have put 2 coats of Beeswax Furniture polish on the now fully dry linen.
This is the Turpentine based polish, because there was no other in the store.
Because the shield is not painted, which could be damaged, i just took the risk.
If this works i'm going to make my own polish, which will also work as a rust protection on metal parts as well for water proofing leather, like shoes.
Consisting of: Beeswax and Linseed-oil (sheepfat can also be added).
Al ingredients are knwon from history.
Put the mixture Beeswax/Linseed-oil in a pot/jar.
For making this mixture fluid, ad more linseed-oil to the Beeswax.
Put a cover/lid on this pot/jar.
Put this near a heatsource, like a stove, and let this stay there for a night.
Don't let it boil.
The next day stir this mixture and apply it on to the shield of something else.

This can be stored in a small pot with a linen or leather cover/lid which can be taken in the field in the soldiers pack.
So you can polish/shine/prerserve whithout the use of WD40 or some other modern material.

Now only the rim and placing the umbo are left

Why wait for the rain.

I treated the shield in the pictures in the same manner as i wrote in the previous post.
The Beeswax furniture polish did as i hoped it would do.
This is a lot cheaper than snow seal of something else from an outdoor shop, and a don't need an electric tool for bringing on the wax.
Never seen electric sockets in a tree

Did you test the shield during great heat as well? If you use a bee's wax-based mixture I wonder if it could melt on a hot summer day.
I remember having some candles next to a window in my garage in summer and they were partially molten and deformed within a day.

Not yet.
Will have to wait for some hot summer days.
But i don't think it is going to be a problem because it is only a thin layer which is being put on.

The (showfight) shield is ready and in use.

the beeswax sweats a little bit in hot weater (25 degrees celsius).
The white part in the lower part of the shield is from the reflection of the camera flash
