Spear of Jesus TV Show(Spear of Destiny)
#1
Hello Caius Ambrosius here I live in Canada where last night on Cable TV Discovery channel there was a show about this spearhead. They did a test to see how old it was. It came to be around 6th to 7th century. Using comptuer graphics they broke down the spear which has many different parts. The Gold part was from the 15th century from a time when it was a holy relic on display. Underneath that is a silver part with Latin on it. It is ascribed to a Mediveal king Urich and St. Morris. This man was a Late Roman calvary officer,(280 AD) an African who led a legion, defied an Imperator and payed a price with his life.( Over his Christian faith ) In the center of the Spear is a nail used at the time of the cruixfiction of the Christ .However tests show this nail is not from that era. The nail however contains traces of an older substance that could not be identify. The spear also belonged to the first Holy Roman Empeoer Charlemange in 800 AD. This is the time according to the show its wings were added on .(The Frankish Look to it)What was intresting was when the spear was broken down to its basic part it does look like a Roman Hasta. A test was done for blood or Organics but none was found. It was too recent too have been used by Constaine the Great, which according to legend possed this spear, as well as by St. Morris. Legend has it that all the conquers from Napelon to that nasty man from Berlin tried to posses it. It was found in Germany at the end of WW2. The rest you know. An intresting tale to say the least. I am sad its not real for one reason. St. Morris sounds like a great Roman who history has sadly forgotten. The show claimed he was the prototype for the Knight of the Middle Ages. He was clearly a man of great courage and character. Cheers Caius Ambrosius/Thomas

Hi Caius Ambrosius,

The spear of destiny was already discussed recently on this thread.

It was a good TV show, wasn't it? A bit sensational, but very interesting.

The guy you call St. Morris was St. Maurice (as a Dutchman, I am SO glad there's subtitles), and he has some legends attached to him.
At best, he was a Christian martyr in the 3rd century, but his legend became 'attached' to more legends of a different origin. At one point he 'became' the commander of the 'Theban' Legion, which especially in Switzerland and Germany was a famous legion during the middle ages, for it was told that all the soldiers were martyred as Christians. All kinds of stories, saints and holy relics are connected to this legendary legion.

St. Maurice may then have 'received' his North African origin, because it was possibly thought that 'Thebans' were from Egypt, hence Maurice as well.

Needless to say, historical research hes defalted that enormous numeber of martyrs, although it remains possible that St. Maurice as well as the Thebans may have been historical. The martyriums and other tales are nonetheless fabrications of a later age.
Hi Rob, Thomas here thanks for setting the record straight. Yes it was a very intresting show, as I am very intrested in the Late Roman era . As the TV show went they called him St. Morris and presented him as a Black Roman Calavry officer, and yes the theban Legion. As a Roman Catholic I recall being taught that St. Marius was the Patron Saint of Soliders. If you might have any info on this subject let me know. As the TV show presented itself this man struck me for his courage and character. Overall a well done show. They had Longius wearing a Coolus helm,Morris or Marius 3rd century Romans wearing Auxillary e helms. and chainmail. Morris outfit did not look so good (I did not regonize his helm) and I think he was wearing a Gladius. Oh well for TV it was rather good over all. Cheers Thom/Caius Oh how is the tower coming along?

Hi Thomas,

Yeah, the Discovery people (or whover they bought the docco from) were a bit too simplistic on good old maurice (is Morris not the way you pronounce Maurice in English?), but I liked how they kinda 'suggested' that the Late Roman period might be the time when the spear was 'created'.
Soit may be the 'Spear of Maurice', after all? I'll try and look up more about him. i once did a little digging into stories which were legends during the late Roman period, as a comparison to stories which may have been legends during the Arthurian age. The Thebans came up a lot of times.

The tower is coming up real good. We did some posing for Graham Sumner's next book today, and went to the tower for the pictures. It so happened they were working on the roof and the balustrade, and I got me a lift to the top. Nice!
Here's a spread I took two weeks ago:
Hi Rob The tower looks great. I quess your unit will have a neat place to hang out. Let me know if you ever find anything about St. Marius or any late roman legend you think might be intresting in regards to the Army. Cheers Ambrosius/Thom
