Mike

Beneficiarii were appointed from the ranks of the army to serve on the staff of military HQs and also provincial governors. in all probability they would serve as military police units within the army. The army also provided paramilitary police to the occupied areas and also the country areas in home territory. when performing this task they were known as stationarii.
hope this is of some help

Mvskitear there is a excellent book about this aspect;
Exploratio,
N.J.E.Austin & N.B.Rankov.
ISBN 0-415-18301-4.
You will need to know Roman history from 2nd BC- 4th AD to follow as it jumps around but otherwise a excellent read Big Grin

I would defiantly recommend it Magnvs but the thing is if you havent read Roman history for this period stated, the book compares situations in the same paragraph of sometimes 600 year period of a similar situation and the various characters. Sometimes it is like reading about MI5/CIA of the day and the huge mistakes made for lack of intel.
