Deepeeka\'s Early Spartan helmet
#1
I was wondering if anyone has seen the (new?) Deepeeka helmet call "early Spartan"-AH6111 in person. The pics look pretty good to me and I've been thinking about getting one. I already have the other version of the Corinthian which I'm only moderately pleased with. This one seems to be better.

It usually looks better to me,too, but I haven't worn or seen it in close yet. It has a bit odd shape, with the neck guard leaning outwards when it shouldn't. Also,if you could rework a bit the eye holes, making them bigger, that would look nicer. And certainly with a crest (made buy you) does add to the impression.
The deepeeka "italocorinthian" which is no "italo" at all, seems to have a better fit,but it looks much less like any ancient example.

Actually, I like their "Italo" Corinthian much better! The "Early Spartan" looks more like an actual Etrusco-Corinthian, made to be worn on top of the head and not actually covering the face. If you look at examples from Italy, they have that same angle to the "face" and the little flanged neckguard. Often they had separate cheekpieces hinged to the bottom rim, as well. Maybe the "Spartan" looks better when worn? Dunno...

Thanks for those responses.
Matt, I see your point . It does look a little like that but better to me.

Giannis, thanks for the pics of it worn. Looks very nice to me. I do wish they hadn't called it Spartan, though. Why not just early Corinthian?
Anyway, good picture and it looks good on. I'm sold. Now if only my supplier( the least expensive,of course) didn't have it on backorder.

Actually it is historically accurate.

A sample appears in the Military Museum from time to time.
Another sample is in Sparta Museum and here you see a sample from Spain:

I have worn it in our Syntagma Event and it instead of Depeeka comforter
I chose to wear my red felt cap. It was quite bearble despite the heat of the day

Kind regards

I thought those were Deepeekas that some of the NYC Greek Warriors wore. Those photos seem to give the helmets more justice than other images I'd seen.

Nice images. I'd prefer a later Corinthian with ear holes. Smile About what time period would this new Deepeeka helmet depict?

I liked them even more with the high crest that the Hoplite Association are using. Pictures taken from their site.

Well, the man at the right side has, an "interesting" clothing Style, i did not know that the Ancient Greeks were so modern! (hey, just a little joke).

I must say this new helmet isn't´t bad, but to me the standard Depeeka helmet looks a bit better, maybe because of the Eye-holes...........
But if I had one of this new Type, i would paint the helmet "face" in black, which might make it more "warlike".

Kind regards

Being fed up with the variable quality of the 'deepeeka' selection we have commissioned 4 new helmets, direct (we are hoping) copies of examples in Munich but in brass of course. 2 versions of the corinthian, a chalcidian and an Illyrian helmet.

Now whilst these are for the Hoplite Association and we only source for members (and it will probably be mid-year before they are available to us) the manufacturer will be at liberty to sell them to the market as a whole and we will certainly try to encourage suppliers to take stocks if they are as good as we anticipate.

The deepeeka 'spartan' is not a bad helmet though, as Stephanos says, but the examples we have had (and have) differ slightly and visibility through some is .. let us say, a challenge!!

However, and as observed, if you put a high crest on they do look good. I made the crest on the ones you see in the images above... and despite all efforts, we could not encourage the 'cowboy' to join!!!

Sadly, I am also the one carrying the helmet........

From Athena Promachos,Spain. Of course he has reenforced it with a crest and horns, but you can get an idea. I agree it makes it look better. It also makes it have a character(if everyone paints it differently) and breaks the uniformity.

Yes, so painted, it looks much more better!
And the horns and ears are making it very individual, again its an impression of the importance of details like the Crest, and the painting.
That's a beautiful Photo, thanks for posting!
