Capsarius inscription on umbo
#1
Salvete,

At the RAT congress in Nijmegen Maarten Dolmans showed a picture of an umbo with the inscription of a capsarius.

I'd like to find a picture of that umbo.

Can anyone post or email me the picture of the capsarius umbo, please?

Vale,
Jef

I don't have an image, but you can find a sketch of this umbo in:

Klumbach, H., Drei römische Schildbuckel aus Mainz, in: Jahrbuch des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums 13, 1966, pp. 165-189.

Hope that helps Big Grin

Thanks Florian! I'll have to track down that sketch then. Or if anyone could scan it for me... I'd like to add the inscription to the umbo of our new capsarius.

Salvete,

Thanks to Uwe I know how the inscription looked like.

It is: VERI CAPSARI LEGIONIS

I was wondering what 'VERI' means in this context.

Also, can someone tell me if the capsarius was the member of a unit of field medics or if he was attached to a certain unit. From this inscription I'd think that there was a seperate unit of field medics in a legion.

Maybe the name of Ver(us) or Ver(ax) in the familiar way you would address a friend?

It means, "Belongs to Verus, capsarius of the legion".

That was my thought too. But I wasn't sure. Latin classes are too long ago Smile

Thanks!
