Roman Whistles
#1
Does anybody have a clue where I can get a reproduction of a Roman whistle? It can be made of anything that would be period, but it should make some noise, I don't want some tiny little one. Thanks

The ones I've seen in the Museum of London are all quite small and made of bone....here are a couple. Hope this is helpful?

For example

Or this one found in Lincoln

Use bird wingbones, these are large and hollow, to make the one shown in the second link.

Okay, thanks for the info, but I guess I thought whistle as the ones you blow into without any other holes, like, well, in Rome the series, or did they not have those types of whistles in the Legions? The reason I'm looking for one is I'm going to do MANY living history demos with kids this summer and I don't want to wear out my voice yelling at the kids, but rather just blow a whistle. Course if they didn't have those types of whistles, then I'll just get my yelling voice back! Big Grin Thanks

I don't know about the legions, but they found some at Regensburg. Purpose unknown, of course.

There is also a 'dog whistle' found at Chester (barrack bloch location), made from bone.

Nice whistle!

Where did it come from?

What time frame is it?

What is it made of?
