Praetorian Relief in USA
#1
The Louvre in Paris is sending 184 Roman works of art , including the famous Praetorian relief to tour the USA. This is the largest collection of Roman works ever to leave Paris.
I must have missed this but it opened in Indianapolis in September, is now at the Seattle Art Museum, Washington until 11th May, and then goes to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art from 19th June to 12th October.

The Praetorian relief (AD 51-52) , originally part of the Arch of Claudius, was found in Rome, documented in 1577 and was part of the Mattei collection until 1615., and acquired by the Louvre in 1824.
The soldiers heads in high relief, part of the body of the soldier at the far left, and part of the eagle and thunderbolt are 16th century restorations. Hopefully you can see in the picture some of the joins between the original and the restoration?

Cheers

So the second head from the right is original then?

Gaius,

The three heads in the forefront are all restorations. Only the three low-relief heads in the background are original. (One is not visible in the photo)

As part of this "event" the museum is sponsoring a Rome on Film festival

There selection of films is, shall we say, very eclectic. Even though the art works on display are from ancient Rome two of the five films are not.

I saw this exhibit late last year at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It's an absolutely fantastic collection of sculpture, reliefs and inscriptions. Enthusiasts of the Roman army (where could I find some of those? ) need to check this exhibit out, if only for the military section of the exhibit which includes some of the more famous pieces like the one above, as well as some very nice diplomas and various inscriptions and battle depictions from all across the empire. Definitely worth the price.

One major letdown. I showed up with my new Rebel XTi and was politely informed that the agreement with the Louvre prohibited photography. Drat.

Me and my friend spent some time arguing over the construction of Trajan's pteruges, were they linen or leather. Only reenactors would get into that kind of discussion.

Fortunately for the reconstructors there are various other sculptures of heads with very similar helmets, scorpios on the cheek pieces and all.
Greets!
