Eagle headed Late Roman swords
#1
I've seen some ebay representations of eagle headed swords- most of which look like

However, I now find the following in the Chris Miks book (well worth the price tag). The handle A (bone on bronze) is in the Kenney private collection in South Beach USA, find spot unknown.

So- is it authentic? Or not? Has anyone seen it in the collection to give a view?

The elements are all authentic beyond doubt, alongside with a nice Third century rectangular chape. There are some doubts about if the copper alloy eagle head belonged originally to this sword or if it was added by some antiques' dealer before it was sold to its current owner.
I didn't know of G and it is really gorgeus Confusedhock: Which size is it?

Aitor, did you measure yourself the "Tetrarch" hilts in person? Confusedhock:

Yes, I did. I even calculated the diameter of the porphyry column to which each pair have been attached...
No that I though it would be accurate, being the statues completely out of scale. It was just some kind of 'tic of the trade'

Have a look at this site,

http://proyectodigital.com/vv/villa_rom ... la_olmeda/

Posted by another member recently. One of the Mosaics clearly shows the person with a nice Eagle Pommel Spatha (pretty sure anyhow, the actual ret of the sword appears to be hidden behind him....)

Aitor,

I'm investigating how to make a copy of picture G above in the Adana museum. On your eagle headed sword, how did you peen over the tang and the fit the eagle head over the top?
Any other tips?

Question - especially for Aitor- would this be a reasonable reconstruction of "g" above? Its simply a combination of some of the other surviving pieces- so a hybrid "mule". But given how little archaeological evidence there is....
