looking for Pictures
#1
Hello fellow Romans Big Grin

I am looking for net pics of a certain Cavalry sports helm I am going to try and reproduce, and I cant seem to find it anywhere on the net.

I have an old rumpled picture of it from the H.R.R. book "Arms and Armour of Imperial Rome". The same helmet is shown in the Osprey book "Roman Auxiliary Cavalryman AD 14-193" (Warrior 101), picture 3A in plate E.

It is refered to as :Sports type A, silver plated, from Emesa, Syria
Any help finding pictures of this helmet would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Johnny C

It's original. Impressive!

The stuff on the top is iron corrosion that have made a mineralization over an original covering of woven hairnet or textile, probably to atach real human hair.

There are a lot of exemples preserved. See that intersting article by Peroni:

OK, I have not seen this version before, I thought it was the same one that had been posted in Peronis article, just going by the three holes in each sheek piece! This is a great helmet! I like how the ears flare out so as not to squash cut off your ears!

There is another very similar helmet of Thracian pattern from Bulgaria. It too has an iron skull portion and a silver foil covered mask. This time though the hair is embossed into the skull section...

Many thanks. That's what I needed. I know of all the Nijmegen helmets and the horsehair that was attached, as I'm researching those helmets over the past few weeks. (there was a new research published lately), wich got me interested in face-mask helmets Big Grin

I'm not certain of horse hair, but IIRC either human hair or bear fur has been speculated for the Kops Plateau example.

Adrian, do you have knowledge of the last year published results of the new research done on these helmets, wich also covers analysis of the glue, hair, etc? They now it was horsehair, almost for sure.

Cool!

No, the last info I have is not that recent. (Willems, von Enckevort and Thijssen I think)

Any chance of a copy of the new reports??
