does anybody know this book?

Bernard van Daele, Het Romeinse leger, Davidsfonds, 2003
I don't think it's translated in English so I'm focusing on our Belgian and Dutch friends.

Yes, I know it. And so does a lot of our belgian friends, as Bernard is one of the belgian Leg XI Claudia PF. I didn´t read the book myself, but I was told it is a nice introduction to the subject, especially if you want to read in Dutch.

If you don't mind reading English. Go to this topic, and find yourself some titles.

link from old RAT

It depents on your area of interest which books would be the best to read. There is a lot of good stuff around.

Hi Patrick,

Bernard indeed takes up the part of centurio or optio at our events Smile

His book is a nice introduction, as Jurgen said. But due to the wide variety of items and time periods discussed it is superficial. It gives a reader a good basic view of the Roman army. But you won't find any specilised details in it.

Doesn't your area has a (university) library? They will surely have some books on the subject. (Okay, I know I want every book on roman history that is a little bit interesting for me on my bookshell, but with a well sorted library you will have enough to read for a while...)

At the KULeuven they have a large selection of Roman military archaeology and history.

No?

A good one about 'veldslagen en propaganda' will be Jona Lendering - Oorlogsmist, 2006.

And about the Romans in the 'lage landen' would be 'De randen van de aarde', althrough the last one is hard to get. (Also by Jona)

And there is also some interesting reads from Fik Meijer and others, for sure. But it depends on what you want to read about.

Well mainly it's about the army itself. I've got a few already so now I'm looking for a book that goes a bit deeper.
Thanks for the many titles !
