Legionary Fortress building specs....

Just wondering what the dimensions of the barracks were for a 1st - 2nd century fort. I am making a small, scale model of a fort, so a few dimensions would help. Also, approximately how long and wide was a legion's "cohort" sized fort? Here is a picture of the fort I'd like to build:<br>

The book you want is 'Building a Roman Legionary Fortress' by Elizabeth Shirley (Tempus publishing 2001). Everything from dimensions to materials to man-hours required, based in part on her work at Inchtuthil.<br>

There are also some useful references in 'Roman Legions and their Fortresses', ed. Richard J Brewer, (publ. The Society of Antiquaries, 2000, ISBN 0 85431 274 9) including a critical analysis of the deposition of legions on the Danube, and Vegetius's legion's fortresses.<br>

The model look as if it will be amazing! I remeber seeing on tv some time ago a virtual guide through a legionary fortress, I can't remeber if it was Chester or Inchtuthil. Anyone else know?<br>

The only thing I have for you is that the trench around the camp was 4 cubits wide and deep, according to Josephus. What scale is the model going to be? <p></p><i></i>

Wow, I just took a look at that, Carus. Just amazing. Has anything on a greater scale been attempted yet? Let's say like a virtual computer animation of a complete Roman town, including forts and civilian buildings? <p></p><i></i>

It allows you to enter to Caldarium and furnace room, look around, crawl through the hypocaust. <p></p><i></i>

I understood they were planning to do more buildings - the praetorium, principia, barracks and so on - but I don't know if anything ever came of that. <p></p><i></i>
