Hello Caius here I was recently watching the HBO Rome on the History Channel. The character of Lucius Vorenus was promted to the Evocati. Pardon my lack of knowing, but what were they?Where they officers? or an special unit within the Legion. Thanks in Advance Caius/Thomas

Hi!
Evocati are veterans which were already disbanded and reenlisted for service.
The later republican troops (after "Marius" especially) served for certain campaigns (like Caesar's legions for example). After the task was done they were usually disbanded and recieved land a.s.o. but sometimes some were reenlisted or even bigger formations joined one side of a conflict (when Pompeius joined Sulla his soldiers were the former (retired) troops of his father).
They are veterans and have a higher status, get higher pay and don't have to fulfill all the daily duties iirc.
too slow
