You might take the time to sew decorative stripes on a tunic to "fancy up" the old tunic with scraps from another, different colored tunic. Cheaper by far than starting over.

Most cloth would have turned into other things, I suspect, caps, cleaning towels, polishing cloths, stuff like that and then be thrown onto the rubbish heap.

Actually, the Coptic Christians in Egypt still refer to themselves as such.
