I've seen belt fasteners that are like a pugio frog, but the end of the belt is very thin, and wraps around the rod behind the frog to fasten the belt.
Does anyone have any references for any, and knows time periods for them?

Not button and loop fittings are they?

Nope. It's been illustrated somewhere, and I suspect it's based on a grave stele. My memory's really vague on the subject but I think it's Republican (I'm hoping), and one of the early styles of the dangling straps. It may have been the end of the belt was cut into three thin thongs, and one or all was looped around the rod and left to hang freely.
It might have been in a JRMES article.
I might be wrong, which is why I've posed the question here.

Definitely a frog type of fastening. No buckles involved. I remember going "Ooooohhh" when I saw it
But of course, can't remember where I saw it now.

I think you might be thinking of the button and loop fastener which was found with the sword from Vindonissa and five belt plates and the remains of a very small hinged buckle. Certainly the suggestion in the Arma article was that the button and loop fastener had probably been used in place of a buckle.

Mystery solved. I was thinking of a comment on a disc type belt piece from Castillejo.

Quote:On the Castillejo plate there's an interesting tidbit in B&C2:
Quote:Castillejo also produced part of a similar width plate (49mm) with a triangular projection terminating in a large disc with a central rivet of uncertain purpose. Although the latter bore more than a passing resemblance to later dagger frogs, unlike them it in fact had a spike behind the disc, indicating that it was originally attached to leather.
Ref: Castillejo: Schulten 1927, Pls. 35,29; 42,2-3.

I'm wondering if this is a method of closing a belt.

It is most frustrating, but every single time that I try to bring up a Photobucket link, my computer at the office or at home slows to snail speed despite the high-speed modems and links at both places and then stalls out giving me an error message that the Photobucket server is too busy. I get them at all hours of the day and night and with several different fora. Has anyone any idea of what is going on?
