pugio attachment
#16
The space between the frogs on my photo is due to the fact that I replaced the Deepeeka suspension on that pugio, and the replacement had much smaller rings. Using the laces in case with this pugio won't make any difference. To eliminate the gap, one has to initially make the balteus with the frogs closer together, which I intend to do when I make my next one.

Provided the frogs are placed closer together or the rings of the pugio are larger, the leather loop system should allow achievement of the desired position, if the circles of the frogs are small enough - if they are large, as in my case, they require wide slits on the leather for the loop to go over the frog, and due to the wide slits on the loops, the pugio will hang lower than desired - see photo 1. In that case, the laces may be preferable - see photo 2; one just has to try on the case by case basis.

I use laces at times as well, being inspired by the photo below - it seems to show a knot (indicated by an arrow). Although this particular case of attachment, seen on the memorial of Annaius Daverzus, displays a little gap between the frogs and the pugio rings and looks rather similar to my leather loop attachment shown in my first post, when viewed from the same angle.

Could you, Crispvs, show us a photo of your pugio attachment?

What about if the pugio loops are big enough to go around the frog altogether, wouldn't that work? Frog connected directly to ring connected directly to pugio sheath? That would be about as tight as it gets, basically, and still removable for when that was needed.

Yes, that does all make sense. Sorry, I wasn't meaning to insult the efforts you have gone to.

Unfortunately I can't show you a picture of mine at the moment as it is in several pieces right now. Hopefully when I put it together again I will remember to take a photo to post up here.

Demetrius,

Most frog buttons are far too large for any normal sized suspension ring to be fitted over. The technique has been achieved by re-enactors in the past, but only when using reconstructions with suspension rings which are much larger than any actual ones which have been found.

Why, you did not say anything even remotely of the sort! I enjoy the discussion and questions, doubts, and criticism that come with it.

Here is my recent project after much study. The belt suspension discs are hand made by me and not based on anything exact. I went with plain discs and plain plates too.
The Pugio scabbard I made also. I tried the "beaded look" I know the rings are a bit large. I'll size them down one day.

As for the discussion, I went with the attachment style of using ties. (which I left uncut so you can see.) It brings the Pugio even and holds it tight. I'm happy with the fit. No flopping!
Thanks,
