Ersatz food
#1
Roman soldiers, in extreme situation, had sometimes to face starvation, when their usual food was unavailable... In some of these situations they had to use "ersatz" food.
The main exemple I know is from the siege of Dyrrachium, when Caesar's soldiers had to eat bread made of roots and milk, quod appellatur chara...

Do you know other exemples, during other wars, of this use of "ersatz" food by Roman soldiers ?

The same is also true about horses, fed with tree leaves (foliis ex arboribus ) for exemple...
