Hello there !
does anybody know if there was ever a roman eagle found by archaeologist?
I've heard of a cohort sign, but never of an eagle

link from old RAT. There we're discussing the size of the eagle. As far no-one has come up with any archeological finds to support the size of an aquila, so I think nobody (who read that topic) know of any.

There was a purported one - ended up in the States I think - but not sure if it was exposed as a fake. It certainly was not securely a properly recorded archaeoligical find. I have a feeling it was either Ross Cowan or Paul McDonnell staff that sent me an image of it, so one of them may be able to help.

may-be You heared about the Silchester eagle - there was found a 16 cm high bronce eagle at Silchester that is now in a museum in Reading. It was found without its wings and inspired Rosemary Sutcliffe to write "The Eagle of the ninth". But it seems that this eagle was not a legion eagle.

How could anyone confuse this "chicken" with an eagle is beyond me :? In truth, it looks more like the quail that constantly traipse through our yard.

I like the last link you show of Ganymede for this comes from Greek Mythology and the eagle is indeed Zeus, for Ganymede was chossen as cup bearer to the god however he was carried off by a whirlwind that made the god so unhappy and he sent an Eagle to rescue him. It has been said of course that the eagle was infact Zeus himself for he had amorous feelings about this boy, this legend is indeed shown by the Romans with one of the Straubing Horse Chamfrons. When I recover pictures of my copy of this chamfron I will post them.

Here are two photos from a Russian forum, http://forum.xlegio.ru/forums/thread-vi ... 210#M29210 Allegedly, the top one (eagle-02.gif) is made of bronze, was found in Armenia, and is described here - Jahrbucher des Romisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseums Mainz 1995, Bd. 42, Taf. 81. I did not check the reference and this is all the info I have.

Here are some links to an eagle I made some time ago for the Vindolanda trust, they have developed it for the historical tourist market. This is where they show the eagles eye view of the Hadrians' Wall area on a video for the visitors to the Vindolanda site. At a later time Robin Birley kindly loaned it to me when I put forward a guard of honour for H.R.H. The Late Princess Margaret when she declared Hadrians Wall a World Monument in 1991.
