Embosing and Tinning Scabbard plates ect ?
#16
Salve,

Here's another original scabbard with tinning. My brother owns a very nice replica of it by Matt Lukes. But I can't find a picture of it that does it justice.

Are we sure that these examples actually were selectively tinned? Just to play devil's advocate for a second, from what I see of these images posted so far, it's all the low areas that are tinned. Looks to me like it could have originally been completely tinned, and the high areas worn through from years of polishing.

Hey Tony, do you have a few digital pics of these plates? I want to eventually have a new scabbard made for my gladius, and I'd like a military theme like that.

This is incorrect. The plates of the pompei lockets are flat. The tinned/silvered parts are not lower than the untinned parts. The same applies to the scabbard I posted a picture of in my last post.

Jef,

I am not familiar with that scabbard you posed up. Where is it from and do you have a better picture?

Salve Crispvs,

The scabbard was apperently found in Belgium, and it's kept in the museum at Leiden (NL).

It's the one on the left in this picture from the Roman Coins website:

I don't have a decent picture of the replica Matt made for my brother. Perhaps Matt has one... I know someone in the ESG has one of these swords too (not made by Matt).

Thanks Jeff,

I had not seen it from that angle before. Do you know anything more about that scabbard?

It's a scabbard founded in Lobith (Netherland). The principal motif it's a naked Mars wit a corintian helmet.

The construction is copper-alloy plates with tinning, and the figures graved like the pompei ones, but not pierced.

If you want probably i can found more information...

I have a Mainz blade I need to build, are there "common" motifs for the scabbard, OR is artistic license allowed? I would hate to spend a ton of time embossing and building a scabbard only to be completely wrong.

Also, what are the base scabbard coverings made of? They appear to be either polished iron or tinned with the brass plates over top........

Thanks!

I would recommend trying to copy an original design. Artistic license is a bit risky, because unless you already posess an intimate knowledge of Roman artistic styles and conventions, artistic license by someone who is not a Roman who lived a couple of millenia ago is likely to end up producing something that the Romans themselves might not have recognised as Roman at all.

Original ones are'nt polished iron. There are commonly copper alloys (even copper) tined. I think there are some Mainz with wooded covered in silver foil, but i'm not completely sure about that.

And please, use a real exemplar and copy 100 x100 or do little modifications. Yes, it's a pity to see a lot of things made with a lot of work and completely wrong!

We'll be happy if you post some pictures when you do it!

Wes there is a lot of various designs to choose from it would be far easier to copy a origonal. They tend to be made from a single sheet as well as individual plates.they are made from bronze or brass. What sort of pictures or designs have you in mind I might have something in my collection.

I am just looking to do a common, everyday scabbard, but my local library rolls their eyes when I come in. There is very little documentation around here for ancient rome...let alone anything specific!!

Any basic pics or drawings of a mainz scabbard.........
