Some people do the sword of tiberius that way, but I don't know if tha tis just for diversity or if it was that way.

So they say, but some one said it was discovered that the 'gold' was only brass. But as an option, you can use brass and tin it for a similar effect?

The easiest way to do what you want is that (NOT PERIOD). You have to do a electrolytic silvering (or comissioned it), and cover with paint or so the things you want to be not covered. The silver or tin will cover the unpainted surfaces, then you get out the paint and the surface will be metal base coloured.

Another way is to tin all the surface and then get out the tin with some sandpaper first ant then with steel wool. Polish the surfaces to get a shiny appearence.

A nice locket!

Thanks for the replys Big Grin but so far I have only come across this one that has been embossed and silvered;

I know about the pompeii fittings and thanks for the pics, but it is the Mainz/Fullum plates I want to see how many were silvered and whether they just did the background or the whole face.
Thanks again keep em coming Big Grin

Perhaps someone that has a copy of Studien zur Roemischen Schwertbewaffnung in der Kaiserzeit, , Koelner Stdien zur Archeaeologie der Roemischen Provinzen (KSARP) 8. VML Verlag: ISBN 978-3-89646-136-0

Could comment here. A vast amount of scabbard parts seem to be published in this book.

You know, there is an opinion out that there that the Sword of Tiberius scabbard plates are stamped, and the sword is just a common or garden legionary's sword. I'm not saying whose opinion it is, but when they pointed it out to me at the BM and I looked closer at it, I pretty much had to agree with him.

Thanks Tarbicvs yes I would believe that they could stamp out these plates and the Tiberivs sword my find a brother one day Big Grin I have found a lot of plates that follow a theme, the thunder bolts and lighting been popular. On the other hand it is not to time consuming to just do them free hand without the need for dies or the dies were just small images which you could mix and match.Lets hope one day they find the dies ect for this types of work.
