Dolphins only for allied marines in the Pelloponesian war.
No evidence for dolphins on Spartan marines shields Since you probablt live in Greece, info on the allied Megarenas and Aeginitans here: http://www.hellenicdefense.gr/per/is/is016.html http://www.hellenicdefense.gr/per/is/is017.html Hope it helps. Kind regards

Hi Dimitrios
I have certainly seen dolphin shield designs before and it would certainly be a fitting device for a marine! There is a fragment of a black figure amphora from the Beazley Archive (550-500BC) with two dolphins on the shield. I’m afraid I can't get a link to work straight to it but go here (link below) then to 'Databases' then search for 'dolphin shield'. Should be second entry. There is also one further down the same page from the Bucarest National history Museum with a warrior in hoplite panoply carrying two spears/javelins and holding a small shield with one dolphin on it. (There are quite a few dolphin shields on the site to choose from)! Link - http://www.beazley.ox.ac.uk There is also an illustration in Nicholas Sekunda's Osprey Book 'Greek Hoplite 480-323 BC' (plate D) depicting a marine with a dolphin on his shield. It doesn’t specify city state though I'm afraid I can't help with the specifically Spartan question. Stefanos should have the answer I think. He seems to have a lot of knowledge of shield designs. Hope this helps

Spartan and marine, though? Isn't it a bit contradictory? I mean, very few Spartan citizens would fight as marines. And i tend to think most of them would be neodamodeis(new citizens).Search what city states provided ships during the end of the Peloponnesian War and find info about their shield devices.Megara and Aegina(especially the latter) must have provided marines, but I don't have a list of the Spartan allies just now.
Khaire Giannis PS.Even the Spartan citizens who fought on ships would not consider themselves "sailors" but just given a nasty task,so dolphins would not be likely if you want to wear the scarlet cloak...

For more on Spartan marines please see my article here:
http://www.spartan-world.de/hoplites.html Click Sparta, click hoplites then scroll doen to the link Spartan Marines ...but they have not corrected the Salamis number Dolphins had the Athenians, Corinthians, Megareans, Ambrakiotes Ambactorioi, Syracusans and Mercenaries of the Delain league. Searching the Beazley Archive I found only Megarean Marines. Hope it helps.
