Legio Symbols
#1
Does anyone know or is there a known symbol for
Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis.

Legio X Fretensis has a trireme, boar, etc
Legio VIII Augusta has a bull

I am having a scutum made and wanted to use the Dubitatus shield boss as an idea and put whatever symbols of Legio XI CPF on there.

Thanks

Paolo

Since this legion was originally constituted by Caesar, its emblem may have been a bull, but this symbol has not been found yet. Instead, the soldiers appear to have worn badges showing the sea god Neptune. An alternative emblem may have been the she-wolf with the twins Romulus and Remus.

Here you can see coins of Gallienus, featuring Neptune and a boar (presumably, in error) for Leg XI. I am not familiar with other evidence that would support the statements in the secondary sources for the alleged symbols of the legion.

On that note...II Trajana Fortis's symbol is thought to have been that of Hercules. Has anyone seen this iconography translated into something useable on a vexillum?
