Pteryges with Hamata
#1
My first atempt at making a subarmalis with linen pteryges:

The hamata is from Find It Armory, with 6mm ID rings, and has been slightly modified by the replacement of the hamata hooks with a pair purchased from Raymond's Quiet Press, the hooks that came with the shirt were quite oversize, and I removed the leather around the neck opening. With the leather around the neck I found it nearly impossible to get my large head through. Over all I'm very satisfied with the shirt, there were only a few bad rings. I fabricated a few replacements and some rings I could simply re-rivet.

For the subarmalis I attempted to follow the examples illustrated by the Adamclisi Metopes, short pteryges around the upper thighs and arms. I used linen sewn around felt. I'm not quite satisfied with the pteryges around the arms. I haven't figured out how to achieve the nice uniform look illustrated on the metopes. The choice of the red on blue color scheme follows the color scheme recently discovered on the statue of Augustus.

One issue that I have with the hamata is how to get it clean? Every time I put it on I need to wash my hands afterwards. It came without galvanization.

Just use it. It will be less everytime.

But nicely done!

Quote:did you dyed your subarmalis & tunic?

I dyed the tunic using a combination of Rit dyes, first crimson, then tan, and followed by chocolate brown. I was attempting to achieve a red-brown color. For the subarmalis I simply purchased navy blue and crimson colored linen.

If you were attempting to mute the scarlet color, a little green would do the trick. Color wheel. To dull any primary color, just use the complimentary color (which is always made of the other two primaries) found oppositely on the color wheel.

I've also used brown, like you did, and it works ok, but that's because of the way brown is made: it has both blue and yellow in it anyhow. RIT also has a color called "Wine" which is a little more like what most of us think the red tunic color should be.

It's a lot easier if you wear white tunics, though.

Lee,
great job!!

Do you have a picture available of just the subarmalis? A lot of members are always asking the question of how to make one and for examples to perhaps emulate off of.

The dirt and grime from the hamata will eventually stop rubbing off. A couple of events will take care of it. You may need to clean your subarmalis once or twice though in the process. I have a hamata from Find It also. Great piece of gear.

I think the Ptreuges will also have that more natural shape and look you are looking for after wearing it it at an event or two. Sometimes the stuff needs to break in like a pair of leather caligae.

I have also a Find-It 6mm hamata. I used WD-40 (following Edge's advice) to eliminate the original greasy coating and at the same time, protect the hamata. As it has been said, if you wear it a couple of times, it progresively produce less dirt and has a less wet appearance.

Here it is:

It is constructed from a pair of rectangles of linen. I only put padding on the shoulders. Some say to make the subarmalis entirely from felt, but considering the extreme hot weather during the reenacting season I thought a good compromise would be the use of heavy, 6oz, linen. The pteryges are made with a felt core with the linen wrapped around. I did two layers of pteryges around the thighs, and considering how easily the shoulder pteryges tend to get suck, only a single layer about the arms.

I will have to try the application of WD-40 to clean the hamata.

I think it looks wonderful and I like the choice of color.

I am pretty sure that the shoulder ptreuges will in time flop/hang the right way. I agree with you only wanting one row. I think a second row would not only get more caught up, you might find it a bit constricting around the arms and shoulders.

I like the two colors on the waist/hip row of ptreuges. Have you considered a way to perhaps to more clearly show off both rows past the hamata? If they could hang a little bit lower, I think it would be really stunning IMHO. Only a thought and my hat off to you with this awesome looking subarmalis.

I originally had the subarmalis about 3 inches longer and I cut off 2 and 1/2 inches. Now the red barely shows. I could make the shoulder padding a tad thinner to compensate.
