Phalerae
#1
Hello all! I am new at this board but have perused its wealth of knowledge for a week or so. I do have a question and I apologize if its been discussed or in the wrong place....

The Phalerae were given as Military decorations. I have seen many with faces on them. My question is Who's faces are they? The current Emperor? Someone else? Please let me know and thanks for all the great informative posts I have seen here.

They could be the face of the emperor or members of the imperial family or also various gods.

I am curious about the reason why they were almost always presented in groups or sets. When you see a veteran adorned with many of them, it makes one wonder it they were awarded for a single heroic act, or for many different acts of bravery.

Discovered a small glass one in the museum in Nijmegen yesterday. Pics will follow.
Greets!
