umbo with dolphins
#1
Salvete,

I remember seeing a picture or drawing of two dolphins punched with dots into an umbo.

Can anyone send me that picture/drawing or post a link?

Thanks in advance,
Jef

Dolphins had great significance with Roman cavalrymen. A lot of pices of equipment feature dolphins.

It was believed that instead of paying the boatman to cross the Styx when they died, a cavalryman rode his own personal dolphin to the other world.

I think I know the umbo you mean Jef, I'll have a trawl through my photos.

Great story -- yet another fact I did not know, and one more reason why I love this site.
