Saturnalia Deva

Sorry for the ambiguity !! I know it is rare to see more than 10 or a dozen in one place at one time and therefore the turnout in those terms was magnificent.....

Cacaius,
Easy mistake to make my friend. As far as I know, both places were origionaly built by the II Audiutrix one after the other.

To everybody else thanks for your kind words of encouragement.

We will have to see what else we can do this year.
Gary.

Few words more about Museum in Deva.

This year I done a trip through the all Romania with my friend who started to write around 600 pages book about Dacian Wars. So our aim was to claim every Dacian fortress and other important places from this war. On the other hand we tried to visit every good museum in this country.

One of the most important ones was :
The Deva Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation

What you will expect after such name of the museum ? Uhh... we expected a lot !!!!

When we reached this museum, we have found only great exhibition of .... holy icons painted by children at the begining of 20 c Smile

Nice lady in the museum explained that todays Romanians came from Romans and Dacians ... so the name of the museum means that this is museum about Romanians civilization and its todays culture in fact .... Ughhh

When I went back to Poland I have found that many many archeologists also went there in the past without any knowledge what it is in fact ..

Are you sure you were at the right museum? I am familiar with the Dacian and Roman museum in Deva (Romania, not Britain). Their main focus is definitely the Dacian and the Roman periods. I think that either you ended up at the art museum (which I believe is near to the history museum) or you were there while they had on a special exhibit. I think that the main part of the museum is closed at the moment while they are renovating the building and the permanent exhibits. Maybe you happened to be there at the wrong time.

If you had told them that you were there doing research, I'm sure they would have been happy to help you. They have always been very helpful whenever I've contacted them. The first time that I was there in person the director (a Roman specialist) took me out into the countryside to see the castrum she and her husband were excavating. This summer, some French colleagues of mine were also doing some research in Transylvania and the museum staff gave them a personal tour of the whole county. I think that this museum and the one in Cluj probably have the best collection of Roman specialists in all of Romania. (The researchers at the museum in Cluj were also very helpful when I contacted them.) Not that the museum in Bucharest was bad. It was ok, but for the number of specialists in the Roman period, I'd have to say that Cluj and Deva had more.

If you ever go back, it's definitely worth contacting someone from the museums in Deva and Cluj. They could probably also put you in touch with some of the researchers from the smaller museums throughout Transylvania.

Thanks Ursus.

If you are so close with this museum, I think You may be right that there was only special exhibiton and the rest closed when I was there.

I was really surprised since there are books from this museum about roman and dacian culture. But I dont speak romanian, and it was huge problem in this country to ask for anything and get information, where almost nobody from common people talk in english. I thought that my russian will help, but also without any success.

Thank you again for explanation.
