Can anyone shed any light on the form of the gabine knot. I have seen some depictions of priests with a pallium (perhaps) tied on their chest, but how is not clear, plus the depictions were from a 19th Century painting, so not necessarily to be trusted.
My source is Livy, HistoryVIII 9.9 (repeated in Religions of Rome 'a soucebook'). IReligions of Rome quotes the gabine knot as a 'particular way of wearing a toga, cmmon in religious ritual-a practice reputed to have derived from the Italian town of Gabii.
What I'm after is what did it look like; so any contemporary descriptions or depictions.
This is an edited post as I originally posted as the 'gabean knot'. I obviousl can't trust my memory.
