Rhaphanaea / Raphanaea
#1
Does anyone know the modern, Arabic name of the legionary base Raphanaea in Syria?

Thanks, sounds plausible, but where's that on the map? I've a pretty good map and know where it ought to be more or less - but where is it exactly?

Yes Alan, Rafniye.

at page 361 n.9 is told on which route Rephanea/Rafniye was.

Yes, that is more or less what I know. The trouble is that I cannot spot the modern village on a modern map...

From a roman coins site:

http://www.cgb.fr/monnaies/vso/v21/gb/m ... nbfic=3871

It seems at: 32°54' N, 36° 10' E

sometimes called Rafniyef too.
