Decorated gripplates and frame sheaths
#1
Salvete,

I have two questions:

-Could a pugio with inlaid gripplates be in a type C scabbard (frame
scabbard)? Or were the gripplates of these pugiones always undecorated?

-Are there any undecorated type B sheaths out there (plain metal plate)? Or are the
undecorated type A sheaths the only undecorated ones out there?

Valete,

AFAIK Jef, the frame sheath daggers (Titelberg, Dangstetten and Exeter) all had plain undecorated iron sheet grips where they survived.

I have never seen or heard of a plain Type B plate.

my RMRS frater Crispvs will no doubt be able to expand further should he read this thread!

Jef,

one dagger with a decorated grip plate that could have had a frame sheath is the Oberaden dagger, but that's not written in stone

there is a plain type B plate in the Xanten collection, will see if I can dig up a picture

cheers
