early 3rd century helmet

Smile ?:

Hi,

I am new on the Forum (first day !) but crazy about roman history for many years.
I belonged to the Foederati (5th c. AD) but I want now to concentrate on early 3rd century AD even if I am not a specialist of this period. If you can answer my questions, I would really appreciate :

- do you think I can use a Auxiliary E or a Niedermörmter helmet as a soldier of the reign of Septimus Severus or Caracalla ?
- there is a debate whether the Auxiliary E was "infantry" or "cavalry" helmet ? Any clue ?
- Niedermörmter replicas are either brass or steel ... What material is the original Niedermörmter made from ?

Many thanks in advance.

About the neidermormters,
- one appears to be a comdination iron brass.bronze,
- the other was all bronze or brass or oriculum or whatever it was....

It was once thought (Robinson, Feugère) that the Niederbieber-helmets of "Auxiliary-Cavalry" types E-F have been made for Cavalry use only, but today it is widely accepted (Ubl, Waurick, Junkelmann) that they have been worn by Infantry and Cavalry alike.
They have been in use from the late 2nd to late 3rd Century AD.

Many thanks for your help.

Do you know suppliers who make accurate replicas of these helmets ? Deepeeka offer these models but I don't know whether they are good or bad ? Holger Ratsdorf (HR Replikate) proposes a beautiful Auxiliary E but price is over 1000 € ...

All the best.

All the best.
