The Igel stone, a painted replica from a lone survivor of an old cemetary (they thought it was from Constantine's family)..

The porta Nigra, tha twas a heavily fortified gateway? I have seen a reconstruction impression in I think Connellys?

Great pictures, the basillica is indeed an impressive building, but you would think they would have used the space for more floors....but then appearances said much too....

Obviously I have a lot of sightseeing to do.....

I thought the foot was from Constantines statue? in Rome?

No, no so very heavily fortified. I mean, of course they were gates and they functioned as such, but also very decorative for an Imperial city. If heavily fortified, they would have had far less windows. Big Grin

Yes, it was. But they scanned and then copied several of them in plastic, and these were displayed all over the town as promotion gimmicks.

Ahhhh, ok. I see about the foot.
I think with the gate, all the windows were artillery ports? But highly elaborate true...which is what I meant by fortified, sorry. I am amazed so much still survives... Big Grin

Pictures look great. There seems to be a lot more neat Roman stuff there than I had previously realized. I can't wait to get there! 4 months to the day and counting . . .
