On learning Latin
#1
I would like to learn Latin to improve my Roman legionary impression and was thinking of using Rosetta Stone language learning software.

Has anyone here used this system, and how good is it? I would really appreciate any feedback, pro or con.

Thanks in advance!

I'd also like to know of any good quick(no doubt not as quick as I'd like) methods of learning some latin. Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm sorry I can't comment on the software.

I usually recommend:
Teach Yourself Beginner's Latin Package (Teach Yourself Language)
by George Sharpley

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Teach-Yourself- ... 88-6705210

It approaches Latin as a spoken language, with audio clips on two CDs including some with Late Roman pronunciation.

'Learn Latin' by Peter Jones is also fun, but is just a book.

http://mentalcode.com/latin/

and

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/lati ... efault.htm

both look OK as online primers.

I'm looking for a reasonable online forum, myself.

Let me know how it goes.

Some rate the Rosetta Stone computer language method very highly, too.

I have not used it. So I can't really comment, I'm just going on the word of others.

Thanks guys for the info.

I think i'll give George Sharpley's Beginner's Latin Package a try for now. I may try Rosetta Stone later, it's a little expensive tho.

I tried Rosetta stone, both for Dutch and Latin. Didn't find it too useful, but I guess it all depends on how you like to study.

If the home courses don't help, try marrying a Latin teacher - it's helped me a lot anyway

Thanks Lucius, I wasn't sure about Rosetta Stone. I think i'll save that as a last resort.

I don't think my wife would approve of me marrying a Latin teacher tho.

Too much is left out. Much better are the free on-line courses offered by Tules:

You just buy the books and put in the time. I've taken the series on latin grammar and I'm currently taking Sermo I. The Sermo series shifts the emphasis to more spoken latin.

I have read about the Rosetta stone software (Considered getting it for Spanish) and most of the reviews I stumbled across seem to make it out to be more expensive than it's worth. Some are also critical of the teaching method, saying that many of the pictures and such are regurgitated through the whole program.

None of this is first hand, just what I read. It was enough to keep me away from Rosetta Stone.
