Pyrrhus Helmet
#1
On the Roman copy of the statue of Pyrrhus of Eprius in Naples he is wearing an interesting and distinctive helmet. It can be seen here: http://www.hellenica.de/Griechenland/Bi ... Epirus.jpg

What kind of Helmet is that? Is there any reproductions of this helmet for purchase?

As far as I know there is no original of exactly this type found until now.
The sculptor made a good job in the details of the ties coming from the neckguard and hooked at the cheekguards, and the overall appearance of the helmet looks like a practical piece of equipment. So I would assume that he based his work on a real piece - possibly of Pyrrhus himself.
From the form of the neckguard and the peak - both typical hellenistic helmet features - it would be related to the "Attic type with peak".
The wreath would of course be an extra-added sign of command.

I can see features of at leat three types of helmets there. The attic neck gueard the cheekguards. The Boeotian crown(wich possibly had a horse tail crest attached to the top) and the extension to the front and all the way to the ears looks a bit thracian(phrygian) to me.At that time helmet types were custom made and especially for generals(coins have a great variety of helmets!)
I also think this could have been a real helmet

The reconstruction that the Germans have done ( www.heteroi.de ) is a good one. The have only missed or could not do the goat horns described by Plutarch.

Kind regards

certainly looks like a variation of a boeotian helmet to me, with an odd neck guard! But that has been said

Yes,the Hetaitoi's helmet has many similarities(if you exclude the crest holder and the ear decoration),but is based on another real find.It is more easilly identified as a Thracian helmet, with the extension above the eyes, the neck guard and especially the typical crest holder.

This one can be seen in the Louvre.
Edit: I also think that Pyrrhus helmet on this statue is unique.

I would love to make the Pyrrhus helmet, but unfortunately I lack any skill in that department and I'm not ashamed to say it this time

Well it could be another kind of hat, since you see how one of the edges bend down a bit, also when you see the sideway it look like a helmet, but I have to scan it...but I was refering more to the coin Smile

But the helmet on the coin isn't unique, It's just a late Boeotian helmet.

He had with him the selfsame rifle you see with him now, all mounted in german silver and the name that he\'d give it set with silver wire under the checkpiece in latin: Et In Arcadia Ego. Common enough for a man to name his gun. His is the first and only ever I seen with an inscription from the classics. - Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

...because of the folded brim which the Pyrrhus-helmet lacks.
