Well, John, in the rodeo, chaps are always buttless.

I was referring to the San Francisco Rodeo, where "buttless" takes on a new meaning.

If anyone wants one (and I sincerely hope NONE of you do), I have seen them on sale in the sales tents that English Heretics (sorry, that's supposed to by 'Heritage' apparently) often put up at sites when we are doing shows there. I have told them off about selling them many times but they always display the usual government employee habit of trying to pass it all off as someone else's responsibility.

Well at least that sort of looks like a Roman helmet!!!

Have you seen the new ROMAN CENTURION SHORT SWORD gladii that are all over EBay?

To quote the auction....

Quote:It is an accurate reproduction of the Roman gladius short sword. This sword repeats not just roman design but also right proportions.... It is notable that the hand guard reflects a shape of eagle open wings – the traditional motif of roman culture... This Roman sword is a perfect addition to a historical assemblage of cold steel weapons!
So, what does it look like??? Well, as I've said before, the amount of workmanship that went into making look SO WRONG is the same amount that it would have taken to make it right!

Wow...

That helmet looks like part of some of Atia's bondage collection from HBO's ROME.

That "Centurion" sword looks more Greek to me, but still horribly awful.

That gladius looks more Greek than Roman, but it doesn't look very Greek, either. Hmm...

Could be early era Romulan, though, I'd have to check the archives. Definitely not Klingon.

Well, I would like to point out that one part of the description is correct and that is that the sword is short. It looks shorter than a gladius as a matter of fact.

The helmet description states:

Quote:Perfect for reenactors, LARP, and faire goers. They're lighter and more versatile than steel, while still providing an authentic look and modest protection. Ours are made of very thick harness grade leather, and are copied from our steel styles. Adjustable liners.

The emphasis is mine.

...but on a more serious note, the Romans had a word for a leather helmet -Galea......so what did one look like and who might have worn it ?? ( I can only think of depictions of charioteers and the references to armed slaves......)

Lorica Segmentata- Leather over Steel

One of the most often complaints regarding the steel Lorica Segmentata is that it "bites". The steel segments often have sharp corners and even with adequate padding can be quite uncomfortable to move in. Here we present a reproduction of the common Roman cuirass modeled after 1st Century design, Confusedhock: crafted in 18 gauge steel and covered in leather with brass accents.

Please include chest size, waist size, and underarm to waist measurement. Oversize charges apply for chest and/or waist sizes over 48".See our "pricing policies" on the "Policies" page.

Item # SCH103600 (size 40-44)

Price $480.00

Item # SCH103605 (size 48-52)

Price $559.00
