Visne partem mei capere? Comminus agamus! * Me semper rogo, Quid faceret Iulius Caesar? * Confidence is a good thing! Overconfidence is too much of a good thing.

Quote:Very nice crest!

What wood did you use? What kind of saw did you use to cut it out?

Vale,

In addition to these questions I was wondering about the following:

I want to make a crestblock for a coolus. How can I determine the correct position for the hole in the crestblock (I mean the small hole that accepts the pin that goes through the spike)?

I use a close-grained hardwood. Basic open-grained pines and the like just tear apart when you try and drill the holes for the hair bundles. I use a simple electric jigsaw to cut it out.

With location of the pin hole, I'm afraid that it involves a lot of marking and measuring! ("Measure twice - cut once"! my Dad used to say!)

An alternative is to make the crest box from two halves. Fix them together temporarily (screws will do) while you make the conical hole for the spike, then take them apart. When apart the position of the hole can be acurately marked on the inside of one side of the conical recess. (Use a piece of wire and poke it into the wood through the hole in the crest spike)

Drill through at this point.

Fix the two halves back together and pass the drill thorugh the hole you have just made and through the other half of the crest box. This should match up nicely with the hole in the crest spike now!

Thanks Adrian.

I noticed that the crest I got from you was made with this two halves trick Smile I was thinking this would be an easier method. But I will try first to do it from one piece...

Very well done! Laudes!

Do you have any tips or a how-to to make a Roman Officer's plum with Ostrich Feathers?

Theo had suggested cutting them from the bottom up.

The original statues might have had them reversed along the length, bending inwards, and then over… yes?

I think the issue with that is more that we've only a few examples in art and they're either brown or red...doesn't exactly represent what could have been. But yeah, you're safer going either of those colours, even though I probably won't lol.

Frater Peronis,

Very nice work, as always!

Regarding Deepeeka making specifically centurial helmets, would it not be slightly simpler to quickly make up a couple of rings such as are to be seen on the Imperial Gallic 'F' from Sisak once you had recieved the helmet into your emporium?

Yes Frater,

This can be done at a small extra cost. I already have some of these tie-rings made up!
