Legionary Formations
#1
I was wondering about prominent formations in the roman cohorts and I am afraid I only know of one  , the "Tustudo" in which men line up in a rectangular formation and create a "shell" of shields. Do any of you know any others.

There are several formations on the Ermine Street Guard page, I think. Repel cavalry (sort of like testudo with teeth), wedge (cuneus) and more.

http://erminestreetguard.co.uk/ is where you can find them. Other legions may well have similar pages of info, I just happened to remember that one.

Here's a book that would help: Roman Battle Tactics, 109BC AD313, by Ross Cowan.

Aulus Gellius (Noctes Atticae X 9 1) list the following tactical formations: “frons, subsidia, cuneus, orbis, globus, forfices, serra, alae, and turres.â€
