The photo you posted is interesting Stafane, but since he is carrying a pelte, wouldn't he be called a peltast?
As for the gymnopaidia, I find this explanation more probable, since in Sparta armed men would be very frequent and Spartans were famous for the festivals that stopped them from going to war. The Karneia nearly let Greece be conquered twice by the Persians!
