Marcus Antonius Gladius
#1
Hey guys,

first of all I'd like to apologize for my bad English. Trying my best here.

I'm here to ask about a sword that i saw in HBO Rome, Marcus Antonius gladius(Eagle head pommel). I was thinkin if you guts know where could i buy a sword like that. Don't have to be identical, i just really love the eagle head pommel.

I couldn't' find some screeenshots to show you guys. Ah, and do you guys know what type of sword is?
Thank's in advance and I'm sorry for the English again.

Oh, and your english is quite good

Tranquilo, no problem

As for the Eagle Headed pommel, there might be some people here that can help you. Try in the ''Marketplace'', maybe Matt Luke can do one for you.

Te cuida.

I apologize if I've stumbled onto the Spanish speaking version of RAT(or Portuguese ?) but I believe the weapon in question is a parazonium. I'm not sure if anyone has said this already.

Actually in the second season of HBO's Rome, during episode 6, in one of the scenes at the battle of Philippi, Marc Antony is wearing and using a white, bone?, eagle head pommeled gladius. Can't recall if he is wearing it during any other episodes, but he may have been.

I too have seen eagle pommeled parazoniums, but in this case it definitely was a gladius that Marc Antony was using.

As for where to get one, I think I have seen similar pommeled ones over at NixImperial. I can't recall the exact address but it should be found pretty easily via your favorite search engine.

In the episode where Anthony goes to Egypt he's wearing it as he enters Cleopatra's palace. Almost the last minute of that one. A very good look at it from the left side. Very similar to the one made by one of the members here shown in a past thread.

Ah...I'll go back and take a look at both those episodes again. It could very well be a case of him having both an eagle pommeled gladius and parazonium. It wouldn't surpirse me in the least if the production designers were to have said "Hey we can get all these weapons to match! Lets do it!" I'll double check and see what I find

Okay, I went back and watched both episodes mentioned above and I can say for certain that the on in Season 2, Episode 6: Phillipi that he uses during the last part of the episode, when Antony and his mounted guards and Octavian, Agrippa and their mounted guards definately appears to be a gladius. Antony even draws it and waves it in the "traditional" charge action.

By its length it appears to be a gladius. That is of course unless my info on the parazonium being a dagger is incorrect. (Which is entirely possible since I am learning that so much of what I have been taught and thought I knew about Rome and the legions is being re-learned by the minute, which I am thoroughly enjoying, btw  )

Antony also has a smaller one that he wears on his right side, with an eagle head pommel, in Episode 5 when he greets and embraces Octavian after Atia "negotiates" the alliance between them.

I am still watching the episodes in Egypt to see if the smaller one is the same one from Episode 5.

There's also Episode 2, Season 1-'How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic'. The scene in the forum where Pullo cuts the man's throat and Antony reaches behind him for a weapon. The blade given him was definetly a gladius, and it was the same eagle headed one he used in later episodes.

I like it too, Bernardo, it got me hooked on the idea of making one!

Ave!

The longer sword that Marc Anthony was carrying looked more like an eagle-handled gladius than a Parazonium.

I made this Gladius with an eagles head from a customized Deepeeka Gladius and a wooden eagle cane:

The Parazonium doesn't always have an eagle’s head and just having an eagle’s head doesn’t make a sword a Parazonium.

Roman Officer's Hellenistic short sword (or long dagger), the Roman Parazonium is often seen with an eagle's head handle when held by an Emperor or with a more traditional Hellenistic style hilt when held by a high ranking officer such as General Germanicus.

The Parazonium is often held in the palm of the hand, and with the arm bent, reaches to the shoulder; this makes the overall length approximately 22" to 24" including the scabbard (based on my arm anyways). The original Parazonium’s were smaller, approximately 18 to 20 inches long with blades of 13 to 15 inches because the Ancient people were shorter and smaller than modern man.

Holding the Parazonium in this fashion, heroically, gives the impression that it was a status symbol or symbol of rank... more than a weapon.

The Parazonium's scabbard is unique in that the sheath is never seen embossed or carved with decorations (although it could have been painted), does not taper to a point, nor does it taper at the sides; the sides stay flat at approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch thick. At the end of the scabbard there is always a half disk (which is sometimes decorated), the half disk is wider than the rest of the scabbard, and approximately 2" long.

I chose to make my Parazonium based on the more traditional Hellenistic style; modeling mine on the Parazonium of General Germanicus Caesar. Found in 1963 in Amelia (of Terni Province, Italy), this 1st C. CE, 2. 9 meter high, monumental bronze statue of Germanicus now stands in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Dell'Umbria, Perugia. PA. The Parazonium sheathed sword hangs from a baldric on the left, under the his arm.

The scabbard of the Parazonium is never seen with any bladric rings or belt loops of any kind. It was either carried in hand or with linen fringe tied around it to slip the scabbard through a bladric.

I also spent a great deal of time researching a Parazonium and made the one below from scratch from a sheet of steel and a long block of wood:

Very nice and quite informative. Thank you for sharing both your knowledge and the pics. Too cool for words.
