It seems more like a shadow to me. Though maybe color version looks different.

It does, in fact seems the way the artist depict volume (shadow). Is there any evidence for this kind of attachment?

I've checked the other shadings in the villa mosaics..., this is a little bit different: the neck is absolutely not shaded. Anyway, I've retouched a pic I have in my "archive" to enhance the details.

yep, the old 'double chin syndrome, the fate of all well fed homo-sapiens,whatever time they lived in I reckon :roll:

The real explanation for the 'fall of the Empire', soft over fed Romans(late) falling prey to the appitites of the hungry ambitious(and treacherous) barbarians. :lol:
