Is that on the right a pileus chin-strap?

It seems more like a shadow to me. Though maybe color version looks different.

It does, in fact seems the way the artist depict volume (shadow). Is there any evidence for this kind of attachment?

I've checked the other shadings in the villa mosaics..., this is a little bit different: the neck is absolutely not shaded. Anyway, I've retouched a pic I have in my "archive" to enhance the details.

And I've changed my mind - IMHO it's shading on the bottom of the jaw now

yep, the old 'double chin syndrome, the fate of all well fed homo-sapiens,whatever time they lived in I reckon

The real explanation for the 'fall of the Empire', soft over fed Romans(late) falling prey to the appitites of the hungry ambitious(and treacherous) barbarians.

Without seeing the original subject of the art, or asking the artist, there's not any way to know for sure.
