In another thread we are discussing names and identity related to "Celts/Germans" and I mentioned the Tribe TV prog with Bruce Parry and confusion when tribes give thier neighbours a derogatory name and it got me thinking..... if a tribal member came to GB or France he could easily come away thinking the French were called "Frogs" & the Brits "Roast Beefs" ( no offence meant, my chum Charles from Paris, introduces himself as a Frog !!!)
My family rerfer to themselves as paddys ... no guessing where we originate from
Do any of you other Europeans have amusing "but freindly" names for us Brits ?

Funnily enough I was reading an interview with Bruce Parry in New Scientist on the train this morning. His most important message was that there is a lot of aggro caused between neighbouring tribes because of that exact same thing, often resulting in bloodshed.
But please, I'd love to know what the rest of Europe calls us as well

Brazilians and some other south-americans call the British ''Chaleros'', meaning tea pots, as there is a widespread belief that every english man/woman will adhere to their sacred ''5 o'clock tea'' ritual, which if interrupted by foreigners may result in bloodshed.
No joke

When my grandfather was in Britain during the second World War, he would refer to a Brit as a limey, but back then there was no derogatory association with it, and the Brits would call him "Hey Canada", or "Canuck".
Do you guys find limey offensive? Where did that come from?

I thought it was supposed to refer to British sailors from the great age of sail, who were supplied limes to ward off scurvy...
No offence taken. It just shows that we eat fruit. Obviously, other nations don't.
