I would suggest making a pair of woollen leg bindings and then trying out the various options so far suggested with them. For each option, put the bindings on securely and then run around for a few minutes. If the method does not work (or you have not done it propery) they will start to loosen and slip down your legs. If you have it right you will have found a workable solution. The proof of the pudding is, as they say, in the eating. We will never find out the truth just by talking about it. If we find a method that (a) works and (b) looks like what we see in the ancient evidence, then we still will not know that we have got it right but we will have eliminated some options and increased the chances that what we have found works MIGHT be the way it was done.
